Elon Musk’s X expands Community Notes to India ahead of general election

Community Notes on X lets contributors add fact-checks and context to posts, helping users discern truth from falsehoods, especially during elections.

X announced on Thursday that community notes are now available in India, with the first set of contributors joining the platform. Community notes on X act like a fact-checking feature, enabling select users to add helpful notes below a specific post, primarily to prevent the spread of misinformation or to add context to a specific post. Elon Musk, the owner of the platform, has also confirmed that community notes are now live in India.

Anyone on X who meets certain criteria can become a contributor to the community notes. Initially, contributors will be able to rate notes, and over time, they will gain the capability to write their own notes, which will again be rated by other contributors. Community notes are available for text posts, images, and videos.

Community notes are already available in over 69 countries, and the same has been introduced in India just around the general election time. This feature will definitely help in preventing the spread of misinformation on the platform. This feature was first launched back in December 2022 for just text posts, and at the time of launch, the feature was limited to select countries like the US.

Interested X users can apply to become contributors from the company’s official website. The eligibility criteria to become a Community Notes contributor include a profile with no X rule violation since January 2023, at least a six-month-old account, the account should have a verified phone number from a trusted phone carrier, and the account should not be associated with any other Community Notes account.

Companies like Google and Meta are announcing new initiatives in India to prevent the spread of fake news, misinformation, and hatred-related content on their platforms. While Google recently made fact-checking tools available in Hindi, Meta is generative AI technology to identify deep fake content and is also investing in consumer awareness campaigns.
