Imagine being able to drag files and windows across your PC, phone and tablet, regardless of their brand or OS. That’s what Snapdragon Seamless wants to enable.
At its Snapdragon Technology Summit, Qualcomm announced a new technology that aims to make devices work better together, regardless of their brand or operating system. The technology, called Snapdragon Seamless, will enable Android, Windows, and Snapdragon devices running other OSes to discover each other and communicate intelligently.
Compatibility and interoperability are often a challenge for consumers who own different devices from different manufacturers. They may feel forced to buy gadgets from a single brand or get locked into one ecosystem. Snapdragon Seamless wants to solve this problem by helping device makers create seamless multi-device experiences for their customers.
Qualcomm is not going to build these experiences itself, though. It expects companies to use its technology as a platform to create their own solutions. To that end, Qualcomm is working with Microsoft, Android, Xiaomi, Asus, Honor, Lenovo, Oppo, and others to bring these multi-device experiences to life.
What can Snapdragon Seamless do? Qualcomm gave some examples, such as dragging files and windows across different types of devices. This is something that Apple and Samsung have done before, but only within their own ecosystems.
Some companies have also tried to create cross-OS experiences, especially between Windows and Android. For example, there’s Phone Link. But Qualcomm wants to go further and act as a platform that bridges the gap between different operating systems. It also wants to extend this to devices from more manufacturers, running other OSes, including smart home devices.
Other benefits of Snapdragon Seamless include mice and keyboards that can work across PCs, phones and tablets; earbuds that can switch intelligently based on the priority of an audio source; and XR devices that can enhance the capabilities of smartphones. Of course, these are just a few possibilities – the actual implementations will depend on the companies that use this platform.
“Snapdragon Seamless fundamentally breaks down the barriers between OEMs, devices and operating systems. It’s the only cross-device system to truly put the user first,” said Dino Bekis, VP and GM of wearables and mixed signal solutions at Qualcomm Technologies.
Snapdragon Seamless is already integrated into Qualcomm’s latest mobile platforms, including the flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 mobile chipset, the new premium PC platform Snapdragon X Elite, as well as the wearable and hearable platforms. The technology will also be available for XR, Auto and IoT platforms in the future.
You should start seeing experiences powered by Snapdragon Seamless as early as this year.
