Samsung’s statement on Sunday promised the Galaxy Ring would deliver more personalised and seamless experiences enabled by advancements in artificial intelligence.
Samsung is looking to expand its portfolio of health-focused wearables with the launch of its first smart ring, unnamed as yet but likely to adopt the Galaxy branding of its other devices. The Korean tech giant offered a sneak peek of the ring at last month’s Galaxy S24 launch event, and now plans to fully unveil the device at next week’s Mobile World Congress 2024 in Barcelona, according to Bloomberg.
While full details remain scarce ahead of the Barcelona showcase, Samsung’s statement on Sunday promised the Galaxy Ring would deliver more personalised and seamless experiences enabled by advancements in artificial intelligence. Additional health-tracking capabilities provided by the ring when paired with Samsung’s existing Galaxy Watch series were also teased.
The ring form factor presents exciting possibilities for health monitoring compared to larger wearables like watches and fitness bands. The device is expected to measure blood flow to track heart rate, respiration and other vital signs. It may also pack ECG functionality to detect irregular heart rhythms, much like the latest Apple Watch and Galaxy Watch models.
Perhaps the Galaxy Ring’s most intriguing rumored feature is the ability to continuously monitor glucose levels – no more painful finger pricks for diabetics. Apple has been working toward this goal for years, but Samsung could beat them to market. Given the skyrocketing rates of diabetes worldwide, such an advancement would be hailed in health circles.
Beyond health tracking, leaks suggest the Galaxy Ring could enable device control and even contactless payments, allowing users to leave their phone and wallet behind. Samsung’s unified software ecosystem gives them a leg up on the competition when it comes to smart ring functionality.
The Galaxy Ring won’t launch officially until later in 2024, but next week’s unveiling should offer the first glimpse of this tiny but powerful wearable.
