Ranji Trophy: Musheer Khan hits record-breaking maiden double hundred for Mumbai in quarterfinals

Ranji Trophy 2023-24: Musheer walked in at number three for Mumbai who suffered a top-order collapse and reached his double century off 350 deliveries with his 18 fours against Baroda.

Young Mumbai batter Musheer Khan converted his maiden First-Class ton into a double hundred for Mumbai during the Ranji Trophy quarterfinal against Baroda at the BKC Ground in Mumbai on Saturday.

Musheer walked in at number three for Mumbai who suffered a top-order collapse and reached his double century off 350 deliveries with his 18 fours. Mumbai had found themselves at 99 for four at one point before Musheer, with contributions from the lower-order, helped Mumbai rack up 384 runs on the board.

The match also marked Musheer’s first First-Class game in over a year since January 2023. In three FC matches before this game, Musheer had totalled 96 runs from five innings with a best of 42.

At 18 years 362 days, Musheer also became the second youngest Bombay/Mumbai batter to record a Ranji Trophy double hundred. Wasim Jaffer holds the overall record among Mumbai batters, having struck a double hundred aged 18 years, 262 days against Saurashtra in the 1996-97 Ranji Trophy season.

Musheer remained unbeaten on 203 off 357 deliveries before Baroda spinner Bhargav Bhatt’s career-best figures of 7 for 112 bundled the home side. The young sensation, who is the younger brother of Sarfaraz Khan, was a toast of the young talent on display in the recently-concluded Under 19 in World Cup.

Musheer emerged as the second-highest scorer in the tournament as India finished runner-up, scoring 360 runs at an average of 60.00, including two centuries and a fifty.

His elder brother Sarfaraz recently made headlines last week after striking twin fifties in his maiden Test for India against England in Rajkot.
