Murali Kartik on RCB’s Yash Dayal: ‘Someone’s trash is someone’s treasure’

IPL 2024: Yash Dayal was into his third over having conceded only five runs in the PowerPlay when Kartik’s supposed word of praise went wrong.

Former India cricketer and commentator Murali Kartik was slammed on social media after his controversial remark on Royal Challengers Bengaluru pacer Yash Dayal during the IPL 2024 match against Punjab Kings on Monday.

The left-armer Dayal was into his third over having conceded only five runs in the PowerPlay when Kartik’s supposed word of praise went wrong. “Released by Gujarat Titans, picked up by RCB. As you always say, someone’s trash is someone’s treasure,” said Kartik on air referring to Dayal’s first stint with the Bengaluru franchise following a lacklustre season with the Gujarat Titans last year.

The Uttar Pradesh bowler was at the receiving end of an incredible bashing from fellow statemate Rinku Singh when he struck five consecutive sixes in the final over to seal a win for the Kolkata Knight Riders. Dayal only featured in five games last season, picking up two wickets.

However, the 26-year-old was RCB’s most economical bowler on show in Bengaluru, conceding only 23 runs in four overs while picking up a wicket. RCB restricted Punjab to 176 for six in 20 overs and secured their win of the season courtesy of Virat Kohli’s half-century and a late blitz from Dinesh Karthik.

How do you say someone’s trash is someone’s treasure? You just called Yash Dayal Trash on air! Like what even?

Comedian Danish Sait, who associated with RCB’s social media as ‘Mr Nags’, took to X (formerly Twitter) to slam Kartik’s comments. “How do you say someone’s trash is someone’s treasure? You just called Yash Dayal Trash on air! Like what even,” he wrote. Sait’s comments were followed by a deluge of social media users lambasting Kartik.

Not the first instance

This is not the first time when Kartik has used the statement about a player. During the recently-concluded Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 season, Kartik had termed Shabnim Ismail’s move to the Mumbai Indians from the UP Warriorz using the same ‘Someone’s trash is someone else’s treasure’ remark.
