Threads can be downloaded for free on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store in over 100 countries.
Meta on Thursday launched a new microblogging platform, which the company touts as Instagram’s “text-based conversation app.” Threads is seen as a direct rival to Twitter which has seen many changes under the ownership of Elon Musk, leaving many users flocking to alternatives like Bluesky and Mastodon.
Threads can be downloaded for free on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store in over 100 countries. It is a text-based social messaging app in which users can post short messages that others can like, share, and comment upon. Posts can be up to 500 characters long and can include links, photos and videos up to 5 minutes in length.
The app is built on the Instagram network, meaning users will be able to reuse their Instagram username with a few taps. It automatically follows the same people you already follow on Instagram. Meta also lets you customise your Threads profile.
Earlier this year, Meta said it was working on a text-based platform. Meta’s Threads takes Twitter, Mastodon, and Bluesky. All of those platforms let users share text, photos, and videos with their followers. The social media giant said that it developed Threads “with tools to enable positive, productive conversations,” and people will be able to manage who is mentioning or is replying to them within the app.
Meta’s new platform comes at a time when Twitter, in particular, has become a controversial microblogging platform. Over the weekend, Twitter made a change which temporarily limited the number of posts users were allowed to see. The outage made core Twitter users frustrated, leaving them with no choice but to switch to rival platforms.
