Apple will initially showcase iOS 18 at WWDC 2024.
Apple’s next iPhone operating system development is in full swing. A recent report from Bloomberg suggests that iOS 18, set to arrive in late 2024, is being considered an “ambitious update” likely to introduce new generative AI-based features and capabilities to iPhones.
An earlier report from Bloomberg did suggest that the company momentarily paused iOS 18 development to fix major issues on iOS 17. Currently, the company is said to be refocusing on iOS 18, which is expected to add generative AI capabilities to iPhones, similar to what Google is doing on Pixel smartphones.
The report also highlights that the iOS 18 update will be extra special, as the iPhone 16 hardware will not feature any major improvements over the iPhone 15. Cupertino aims to compensate for this by offering a feature-rich software experience.
In addition to iOS 18, iPadOS 18, watchOS 11, and macOS 15 are also expected to receive numerous new features. This time around, Apple is said to be focusing on quality to deliver a glitch-free user experience at the time of launch.
Apple’s software development reportedly occurs in various stages. The initial stage is called M1, followed by the next version termed M2. The company completes four such milestones before showcasing the new operating system at its annual developer’s conference, known as WWDC, usually held in June each year.
Upon the release of iOS 17 in September, the update faced numerous issues. Since then, the company has been fixing these issues with software updates and has addressed major concerns such as the iPhone 15 Pro series overheating, NFC-related issues, and random restarting.
