India are set to take on Ireland in a two match T20I series, where the team is expected to field a fresh squad.
India are set to play a two-match series in Ireland under the leadership of Hardik Pandya. The selectors have picked up a fresh-looking team for the associate nation tour. However, with just two matches to play, many have questioned the possibility of taking these many first-timers, who might not be able to play for a single minute in the series.
Reports floating around in the Indian media have suggested that India might take the majority of the Ireland squad to England, where the team play a white ball series.
Speaking about the same, former Indian women’s team coach WV Raman said that it would be a good idea if the Ireland tour squad travelled to England to play the T20Is.
“I feel it is a good idea because how many chances can you give in two matches. So if they play the same team in another series, you will be able to give more chances. It is better to give four chances to a boy instead of two,” Raman told News24 sports during an interaction.
“It will be very good if they keep the same team for continuity because you will have to see what everyone can do, so that when you select the team for the World Cup you have a good idea about them if the same team plays in the England series as well,” he further added.
India chose to play an unchanged squad throughout the South Africa series, which meant that many youngsters did not get a chance to showcase their talents. Raman has backed Venkatesh Iyer and Umran Malik to play in Ireland.
“This is a great opportunity to give chances to new players and those who have not got too many chances in the last one year. You can play Umran Malik, you can also play Venkatesh Iyer in the XI.”
India will start against Ireland on June 26. The match begins at 9 PM IST
