Following the strong rumours on the internet that claimed the much-awaited movie of Manirathnam, ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ will release directly on OTT platform, the makers have cleared the air and confirmed that the film will be released only in theatres.
Madras Talkies officially refuted these rumours. “Ponniyin Selvan franchise will surely be a theatrical release and not an OTT-only release. The film has been made for the theatrical experience. Direct OTT premiere of Ponniyin Selvan is baseless rumours. We want our audience to celebrate the big film on the big screen with their family and friends,” Siva Ananth, the executive producer of the film, confirmed recently.
‘Ponniyin Selvan’ features Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha Krishnan, Vikram Prabhu, Prakash Raj, Prabhu, Aishwarya Lekshmi, and several others, and their characters were introduced a few months back. AR Rahman has composed the music while the cinematography is handled by Ravi Varman. The film is bankrolled by Mani Ratnam’s Madras Talkies in association with Lyca Productions.
The film is based on the historical fiction novel by Kalki Krishnamurthy, written in Tamil. The novel was first serialised in the weekly editions of Kalki from 29 October 1950 to 16 May 1954 and released in book form of five parts in 1955. In five volumes or about 2,210 pages, it tells the story of the early days of Arulmozhivarman who later became the great Chola emperor Rajaraja Chola I.
