Google Maps is giving users a more immersive experience with its new ‘AR version’ of Maps
The latest update to Google Maps is giving users a more immersive experience with its new ‘AR version’ of Maps. All thanks to the magic of augmented reality (AR) and the implementation of it in Google Maps.
As explained in a blog post, certain well-known landmarks will be shown in a virtual reality format. Now you can get an immersive experience about a landmark with its virtual reality version. Google further added that in honor of the 2024 Olympics, these features are focusing on Paris first.

Google explained in an official blog that with AR, you can transport back to the 1900s. The AR version of Google maps will allow you to experience architectural concepts of the Eiffel Tower.
It is believed that these architectures were never realized or seen in the Exposition Universelle country pavilions that were temporarily built along the Seine for the 1900s World Fair. To learn more about these landmarks, you can check out the interactive info cards that dive deeper into their history and culture.
In addition to this, Maps’ AR experience will also let you explore landmarks in augmented reality by simply raising your device and moving it around in front of the landmark. Those at home can also access the experience through Street View, which now includes a trip through landmark history.
Other updates
Google says that similar experiences are coming to more Parisian landmarks soon, including Notre-Dame Cathedral. You’ll also be able to see the Bastille Saint-Antoine and the Palais des Tuileries just the way they were before their demolition.
The new experiences have been developed in collaboration with Google Arts & Culture and gaming studio Ubisoft. The collaboration is expected to be one of several new initiatives Google has introduced in its apps to tie in with the Olympic Games. For more updates, you can keep a track of the official website of Google.
Recently, Google shared plans to bring in ‘call casting’ and ‘Instant hotspot’ features. According to 9to5 Google, the Cross-device features will be available through an update. After the update you can see a cross-device option in the device settings. As of now the feature is available on Android devices running versions 24.28.34 on the Google Play services. Furthermore, Google also introduced an ‘edit option’ with Google message. With Google Messages you can say goodbye to the *asterisk and edit messages after they’re sent.
