Creators on Apple Podcasts no longer have to worry about writing long transcripts.
Apple’s upcoming iOS 17.4 update will introduce several new capabilities for iPhone users, including the option to install a third-party app store in Europe. Additionally, the update brings a feature for Apple Podcasts users with support for auto transcript generation.
The auto transcript generation feature on Apple Podcasts is accessible for iPhones running on iOS 17.4 or newer versions in over 170 countries, including India. Currently, transcript generation is supported in English, French, German, and Spanish.
Apple claims that the automatically generated transcripts will be “free of spelling and punctuation errors, and include all segments of the episode.” It may take up to 24 hours to generate a transcript for a specific episode, and the company has confirmed that transcripts will also be generated for already uploaded episodes.
The new auto transcript feature on Apple Podcasts allows users to read the full text of the audio with an option to search for a specific keyword. As the episode plays, the corresponding sentence will be highlighted, facilitating a synchronised reading experience.
Apple will automatically generate a transcript as soon as the episode is published, but there might be a slight delay in processing. If the episode is edited, such as with dynamically inserted audio, the transcript will not reflect the changes made since the original transcript. Furthermore, transcripts will not be available for music lyrics.
Content creators have the option to opt out of auto transcript generation by selecting the “display transcripts that I provide” option. This choice can be made for a specific episode or for an entire account. Creators need to upload the transcript in either VTT or SRT format.
Moreover, these transcripts will be available for creators to download, edit, and re-upload to the platform. Apple emphasises that for optimal auto transcript generation, audio quality should be high, and podcast language and explicit settings should be properly configured. Auto-generated transcripts support for the Apple Podcasts app on iPhones and iPads is similar to what Spotify introduced to its streaming app last year.
