Man orders foldable smartphone on Amazon, gets delivered tea cups instead.
While Amazon India recently celebrated its most successful Prime Day to date, with record sales and increased Prime memberships, the e-commerce giant is facing a growing public relations crisis due to a series of delivery-related incidents.
In a troubling turn of events for Amazon, a 42-year-old resident of Mahim, Mumbai, has reported receiving a set of tea cups instead of the high-end smartphone he ordered online. Amar Chavan, a deputy engineer at Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST), placed an order for a Tecno Phantom V Fold 5G smartphone valued at Rs 54,999. However, upon receiving his delivery on July 15, Chavan was shocked to find tea cups in the package instead of the expected phone.
According to a PTI report, Chavan has filed a police complaint against Amazon, alleging that the company engaged in fraudulent activity. Chavan’s frustration is compounded by his claims that Amazon’s customer support was unresponsive and unhelpful. Despite initial assurances that the issue would be investigated, Chavan asserts that the company failed to follow up or provide any investigation report. This lack of support prompted him to escalate the matter to the police, and he has reportedly provided them with CCTV footage of the delivery person.
Chavan’s experience underscores a recurring issue with Amazon deliveries, which has recently been highlighted by another incident involving a Bengaluru woman who found a snake in her Amazon package last month. These incidents point to potential lapses in quality control and delivery procedures that could be impacting customer trust.
The situation raises several questions about the reliability of online retail services and the effectiveness of their customer service departments. While Amazon has yet to publicly respond to Chavan’s complaint, the company will likely face increasing scrutiny as it addresses these serious allegations.
In response to these incidents, there may be calls for Amazon to review and strengthen its delivery verification processes and improve its customer service protocols. As online shopping continues to grow, ensuring the accuracy of deliveries and maintaining customer trust will be crucial for e-commerce giants like Amazon.
The news comes even as Amazon saw its most successful Prime Day event in India surpassing previous years in sales and customer engagement. This eighth edition witnessed a record-breaking number of items sold in two days. Prime membership saw a significant surge, with a 25 percent increase in participating shoppers compared to the previous year. The event also attracted a higher number of new Prime member sign-ups. Amazon Prime’s delivery services also reached new heights, with the majority of orders delivered to Prime members within two days, the platform said in a press release.
