In a move signalling Apple’s growing interest and focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI), Bloomberg reported on Tuesday that the tech giant will secure an observer role on OpenAI’s board as part of a partnership announced last month.
According to the report, Phil Schiller, Apple’s App Store chief and former marketing head, will be appointed to the observer position. Observers, while lacking voting rights or other typical board member authorities, are granted access to board meetings, providing valuable insight into the company’s decision-making processes.
The official commencement of this board arrangement is expected later this year, with Schiller yet to attend any meetings.
This development marks a significant milestone in the AI landscape. While the specifics of the partnership remain undisclosed, Apple’s involvement suggests a strategic push towards integrating advanced AI technologies into its products and services. Apple last month announced to integrate OpenAI’s ChatGPT into its products and services.
Apple-OpenAI partnership could prove beneficial to both the parties. Apple’s vast resources and user base could provide OpenAI with the means to further develop its AI research, while OpenAI’s cutting-edge technology could equip Apple with a competitive edge in the rapidly evolving AI market.
The news follows closely after OpenAI recently announced its leadership expansion, which included the appointment of CEO Sam Altman, former Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation CEO Sue Desmond-Hellmann, and Instacart CEO Fidji Simo, among others.
