Samsung’s rumored to pack serious AI power into the upcoming Galaxy S24. These are the rumoured ways generative AI could define its next flagship phones.
Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event on January 17 is shaping up to be a major showcase for generative AI on smartphones. While new Galaxy S24 phones will likely feature upgraded hardware like high-resolution cameras and vibrant displays, the big focus this year appears to be on software – specifically Samsung’s new AI initiatives.
Samsung recently announced Galaxy AI, described as a “comprehensive mobile AI experience” for Galaxy devices. Though details remain scarce, Samsung says Galaxy AI will power features related to communication, productivity, and creativity when it launches in early 2024.
The timing suggests Galaxy AI will debut on the Galaxy S24 line, providing an AI boost lacking in predecessor Galaxy phones. Samsung previously teased one Galaxy AI capability called AI Live Translate Call, which provides real-time audio and text translations during phone calls made through Samsung’s native calling app. This on-device processing means translations occur privately, contrasting with cloud-based solutions.
While AI Live Translate Call focuses on privacy, some Galaxy AI features may rely on the cloud. But processing certain tasks locally when possible aligns with Samsung’s stated privacy goals. Galaxy AI seems reminiscent of Bixby, Samsung’s 6-year-old digital assistant, but likely takes capabilities up a notch. Bixby will likely continue managing Samsung’s connected home devices, while Galaxy AI becomes the AI face of Galaxy phones.
New silicon like the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip expected in Galaxy S24 models sold in the US and Samsung’s Exynos 2400 abroad will provide ample AI muscle. Both chips boast impressive gains in AI performance over predecessors, ideally suiting them to on-device execution of Galaxy AI features.
Qualcomm has already teased Snapdragon 8 Gen 3’s aptitude for AI, demonstrating how the chip can generate notes from calls. The Exynos 2400 likewise promises huge AI gains that Samsung says enable innovations like text-to-image generation. Whichever processor ends up powering a given Galaxy S24 model, AI abilities should impress.
Considering Qualcomm’s AI phone demos and Samsung’s Exynos 2400 text-to-image claims, generative AI could be a marquee Galaxy AI trick. The technology behind chatbots like ChatGPT enables creating text, images, video, and more from prompts. Samsung may bake user-friendly generative AI directly into Galaxy S24 cameras, messaging, and other apps.
With Apple reportedly planning generative AI for future products, Samsung has incentive to beat its biggest rival in debuting impactful on-device generative AI. We’ll have to wait for Galaxy Unpacked 2024 to know exactly how Samsung wields its new AI power.
