Microsoft’s upcoming Surface lineup will feature a next-gen NPU: Report

Microsoft’s upcoming Surface lineup is expected to feature a next-gen neural processing unit (NPU) and will be available in both Intel and ARM variants.

Microsoft is gearing up to add new AI-powered features to its upcoming Surface PC lineup. Codenamed CADMUS, the new machines might be powered by a next-generation neural processing unit and come in both Intel and ARM variants.

According to a report by Windows Central’s Zac Bowden citing unnamed sources, the Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 will have Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon X chips whereas the Intel-powered variants will be powered by the company’s 14th Gen processors.

The new NPU chips will help these upcoming PCs run the AI features Microsoft will include in the next major Windows version the company is working on. It is said that the hardware will also bring significant improvements in areas like battery life, security and battery life, bringing it in line with Apple silicon..

The report also details the Surface Laptop 6, which will now bump up the screen size from 13.5-inch to 13.8-inch and come with a rounded display with thinner bezels, like the Surface Pro 10. It might also key a touchpad with haptic feedback and a dedicated button for Microsoft Copilot, the tech giant’s AI-powered chatbot. 

On the connectivity front, the Surface Laptop 6 may have a USB-A port, two USB-C ports and a Surface Connect port for charging. As for the Surface Pro 10, it will follow the same pricing as its predecessor and might be announced in the spring of 2024. Microsoft is also planning a redesigned Surface Pro and a Surface Laptop Studio in 2025.
