Surya has not scored a single run in the three-match ODI series against Australia in home conditions. Samson on the other hand has done well for India in the limited opportunities he was given.
Former India skipper Kapil Dev said that Indian star batter Suryakumar Yadav should not be compared to wicketkeeper- batter Sanju Samson. The world cup winning captain also questioned that if Samson goes through a bad phase then will we talk about somebody else?
While on an ABP News show, Kapil said, “A cricketer who has played so well will always get more chances. Don’t compare Surya with Sanju Samson, it doesn’t seem right. If Sanju goes through a bad phase then you will talk about somebody else.”
“This should not happen. If the team management has decided to back Suryakumar Yadav then he should be given more chances. Yes, people will talk, and give their opinion but ultimately it’s the management’s call,” he added.
Surya has not scored a single run in the three-match ODI series against Australia in home conditions. The batter struggled to put the bat on the ball in all his outings. In the third ODI in Chennai, Surya who batted at number four in the first two ODI was demoted to number seven. However, the change in batting position did not change the luck of the batter as he completed a hattrick of ducks in the series. However, many Ex cricketers and Pundits felt it was not the right move to demote the out-of-form batter as it may dent his confidence.
Kapil on contrary supported the team’s decision as he said, “It’s very easy to talk after the match is finished. Maybe the idea behind sending Suryakumar at No.7 was to give him an opportunity as a finisher. This (shuffling of the batting order) is nothing new in ODIs. This has happened many times before.”
“Yes, at times it can happen that a batter’s confidence is dented if he has been dragged down the order. But the onus rests on the player to tell his captain that ‘I can handle myself in the top order.’ The coach and captain must have taken the decision with particular thinking,” he added.
Surya scored 433 runs in ODI at an average of 24.05. Samson on the other hand, scored 330 runs from 11 games at an average of 66. Samson on has done well for India in ODI cricket in the limited opportunities he was given.
