Everyday apps you didn’t know were powered by GPT-4

OpenAI recently announced the latest version of its large language model – GPT 4. Here’s a quick look at how some apps like Duolingo and Khan Academy are using GPT 4 to enhance user experience.

OpenAI, the company that gave us ChatGPT, recently announced the latest and most advanced version of its large language model – GPT4, which powers Microsoft’s new Bing.

GPT-4 is more advanced compared to GPT 3.5 and can generate and edit technical write-ups and can also respond to both images as well as text input. While OpenAI suggests the latest version is an interactive upgrade, GPT-4 is able to handle more complex queries and compared to the previous version, it is more reliable and creative. Here is the full list of apps powered by GPT-4 that we use on a day-to-day basis.

Duolingo

With over 50 million learners, Duolingo is one of the most popular apps if you want to learn a new language. The company says it is using GPT-4 to power two new features – ‘Role Play’, an AI-powered conversation partner and ‘Explain my Answer’, a feature that breaks down rules of a language when the user makes a mistake. Developers say when users click on Explain my Answer, GPT-4 will generate a response, from where users can either return to the lesson or get further explanation.

The above-mentioned features are available in the newly launched subscription tier called Duolingo Max. Currently limited to Spanish and French, the company says it has plans to support more languages in the near future. It is available on both Android and iOS-powered devices.

Be My Eyes

Founded in 2012, Be My Eyes is a Danish startup working on creating technology for blind people or those with low vision. It helps visually challenged people to connect with volunteers who can help them with daily life tasks like navigating to a place.

Powered by GPT-4, Be My Eyes developed a Virtual Volunteer for the Be My Eyes app that can under just like a human volunteer would and even generate the same level of context. The startup also shared an example where a visually challenged person was able to navigate the railway system and get about where they were on the map as well as get ‘point-by-point instructions on how to safely reach where they wanted to go.’

The developers say after countless hours of training, GPT-4 can now identify the important parts of a webpage and knows which parts to read or summarize and can help visually challenged users navigate even the most complex webpages like e-commerce and shopping websites. It is available for both Android and iOS users and can be downloaded for free.

Stripe

Stripe is a popular payment gateway platform that helps businesses and individuals process international payments. The company is already using GPT-3 for tasks like routing issue tickets and summarizing user questions.

With GPT-4, Stripe says it can understand user business better and scan sites to get a summary of what they do better than human reviewers. Developers say the updated model can easily understand user questions, highlight the important section, summarize solutions and even read detailed documentation.

The company is also using GPT-4 to analyze the syntax of posts in Discord to flag suspicious accounts, scan inbound communications and identify coordinated attacks.

Khan Academy

Khan Academy is a non-profit educational organisation that helps educate students by giving them short lessons in video format. Recently, the organisation announced that it will be using GPT-4 with Khamingo, an AI-powered assistant that helps students as a virtual tutor and acts as a classroom assistant for teachers.

While the feature being worked on, Khan Academy says GPT-4 might be able to help students ‘contextualize the greater relevance of what they’re studying or teach specific points of computer programming.’ The developers are also testing features that will help teachers like writing classroom prompts and creating instructional materials for lessons.

Khan Academy can be downloaded for free on both Android as well as iOS and has no in-app purchases or subscriptions.
