Bahraini athletes shone brightly in the 52nd CISM World Military Marathon Championship being held in Lima, Peru.
Bahraini long-distance runner Shumi Dechasa, who won the CISM Marathon in 2019, triumphed again, clocking a time of 02:20:09 and finishing just three seconds ahead of Kenya-born compatriot, Marius Kimutai Jepki. Moroccan Reda El-Aaraby clinched third position.
Bahrain also won the world military title, relegating Morocco and Poland, respectively, to second and third place.
And Eunice Chebichii Chumba brought further glory to Bahrain by winning the women’s marathon, finishing more than 20 seconds ahead of Ethiopia-born compatriot Shitaye Eshete Habtegebrel. Poland’s Iwona Bernardelli came in third.
The women’s team competition saw Bahrain clinching second place behind winners Poland, while Lithuania finished in third place.
A total of 76 athletes from 17 countries converged on the Peruvian capital to take part in the race.
They include Bahrain, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Belgium, Colombia, Ecuador, Spain, France, Guinea, Lithuania, Morocco, The Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Tunisia, Slovenia and hosts, Peru.
BDF Commander-in-Chief Field Marshall Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa congratulated His Majesty King Hamad on the outstanding achievements of the Bahraini athletes.
He also congratulated His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister.
