Benny Dayal, who is one of the popular singers in Bollywood has lent his voice to Ranbir Kapoor‘s ‘Badtameez Dil’ and Arjun Kapoor’s in ‘Locha-E-Ulfat’, and the list goes on and on. The talented singer is a fantastic live performer, but did you know that as a child he was obsessed with dancing? In an exclusive interaction with ETimes, the playback singer revealed who noticed his singing talent, how he deals with mean comments on social media and the new music that he is working on currently.
Excerpts:
What inspired you to become a singer?
At first, it was an obsession with dancing. I started learning music in the same year I started learning dance. My inclination was more towards dancing, and I was so gung ho about Michael Jackson when I was a kid. However, my mother put me into Bharat Natyam training, where my teacher mentioned that I actually sing well, in key and that it is inbuilt. That is how it all started for me in terms of singing and why I chose to sing.
According to you, what quality a good singer must possess?
A good personality.
What preparations do you do before any recording or a concert?
Try and unlearn whatever you know.
When was the last time you performed in front of a huge audience? What was your experience like?
Last year at IIM Udaipur, it was awesome. Performing at universities and colleges is far more energetic. There were three days, and the audience wanted to have the best time with their friends and everyone, so if your music is helping them have a good time, I think that’s a great feeling.
What musician do you admire the most and why?
There are too many musicians—can’t just say one or two or three. It goes without saying that it is a mixed bag of many musicians from all around the world.
If you could change one thing about our music industry, what would that be?
Views, that’s all I have to say.
Do you have any artistic collaboration plans? What new music are you working on?
Of course, collaborations are always happening. In terms of new music, I am working on a few individual projects and a lot of movies down South, while recently, in Hindi, I have sung for the movie 83.
What advice would you give to someone who just started their music career?
Don’t filter your own personality. Your personality is what becomes your music. So, I think I believe in that.
You crooned songs in various regional languages, which language was easiest and which one was toughest to adapt?
Every language has its own challenge, but for me personally, Bangla was mildly tougher since I was not very familiar with it when I was singing. So, I would say that I had faced the most challenges learning Bangla.
How do you deal with mean comments and hate messages on social media?
Ignore.
How was your experience performing at the Mahindra Open Drive?
I was very excited! As musicians, we love performing as a team. Coming to festivals is even more fun because there is a mixed bag of the audience, and you get to see other musicians perform and say hello to them—it’s a very exciting moment. I think we musicians love each other a lot.
